Want to listen on your phone?
The Make Shift Happen Show is now on Stitchers. Click the image below and it will give you options to download their mobile app (for free!!) so you can listen on whatever kind of phone you have (unless it is a rotary phone. You are SOL on that my friend). How freaking cool is that?
Show notes…
There are 4 main segments and one news worthy item that I lead out with. The Make Shift Happen Podcast debuted on 3 TOP 10 lists in the US, Canada and the UK.
First Segment: Shift Shout Out
Each week I intend to give a shout out to something that I think could greatly facilitate your shift. It might be a book review, a website or blog recommendation, or a product or service.
In the inaugral shout out I talk about a product I been using for some time now and LOVE. It’s called the Ultimate Body Press and you can find more about their product by clicking the link below.
Second Segment: Got shift?
Since this is a show about shift, and I am constantly looking to create shift in my own life on a daily basis, I am going to talk to you about a significant shift I made this week.
Pictures!
There is a saying that a picture tells a 1000 words. I disagree. A picture tells the truth!!
Third Segment: The Shift Series
This is based on the blog post that came out on Friday. You can read that —> HERE.
In this segment I ..
- explain what the paradox of success is and the symptoms that arise when we suffer from it
- explain what a hard reboot is
- take about the 3 steps to a hard reboot with a few examples for each
Fourth Segment: Talking Shi(f)t
This was probably the best commented post I have ever had. The quality of the comments were OUTSTANDING.
There were also some interesting items that arose that I would like to expand on.
- Mary talked about a sense of cockiness that develops when we begin to have success [I will expand on this in relation to the paradox of success]
- Zorica mentioned how tough it is to deal with people who can eat whatever they want and experience no ill health or weight gain [I provide an alternative way to see this situation and our own]
- Lisa talked about taking pictures for the first time this past week and how alarmed she was at how she looked [I will reinforce what I said above about the SHEER power of pictures on a weekly basis]
- Chriss talks about portion control. [I want to SMASH a myth that is out there about the Paleo diet.]
Listener challenge…
Using the material I discuss,
1. Begin a list of everything you think may be holding you back. Refer to my post for examples.
Click —> HERE.
2. Decide if you are in need of a hard reboot (or a soft reboot0.
3. Create a list of validated learning
Additional resources mentioned…
- The make shift happen book
- Roger Dickerman’s, The Relentless Transformation
I hope you enjoy this show as much as I did making it.
Now go, make shift happen,
Dean

Great show! I’m obsessed with maintenance, even more than with thin thighs (laughing); very familiar with Natl Weight Control Registry. On my own I’ve researched and written tons on this topic, but it does not excite the masses. Getting there is one thing, staying there is another. Ironically we all try to cut corners to see what we can abandon once we reach our goal.
Which leads to my hard reboot. Started Primal Blueprint in January, and aside from giving up grains, the most important change I made was to kick long sessions of cardio to the curb. Well, recently I’ve gone from only slow walking 30 min 3 times a week to fast paced 45-60 min walks almost every day, sometimes twice a day. Hotspot? Career/job dissatisfaction and all the unpleasantness in that realm. Results? Same as always: ravenous appetite, lethargic and consuming more carbs to perk up (not grains, but still), re-ingnited hamstring injuries, and of course weight gain, I gained 2.5 pounds – so far… Getting back to basics of what made me successful in the first place this week for sure!
Hey paula I LOVE the depth and transparency in your comments. And it’s surprising how much our chosen lifestyle/career affects how we look.
I’m going to be launching a second podcast in the near future. It will be the MSH Show: Lifestyle edition where I interview people living life on their own terms.
I struggled with this for such a long time and I know how hard it is to make the shift.
Congrats on making three top ten lists!
I bought a brand spanking new journal today. It seems as though I have a few lists I need to make…
Thanks for helping us look (and think) a little deeper.
Love me those journals. I actually started buying sketch notepads from an art store up the street. The paper quality is better and it makes me feel more creative.
Be curious to hear what you learn as you continue with this journey Tracie.
Tomorrow is June 1 and I am in for a hard reboot! So glad I decided to listen to this while I was working! Dean you rock and do a tremendous job. Thank You!
Thanks Julie. Is it wrong if I say I do rock!
ha ha!
Love your work, Dean, and way you have transformed your own life.
Am downloading show #2 in itunes as I type and can’t wait to listen to it.
I have been thinking your hard reboot post this past week, because I’m about to have one placed upon me, in the sense that I signed up for an online diet and training program about a month ago (sorry it’s not yours, but this one is local to Australia and a friend of mine was doing it and I’ll meet more likeminded people to train with ….. quietly trailing off in shame) and it starts on Monday. The issue I am having is that between signing up and now I have gone from being all gung-ho excited to feeling hopeless and overwhelmed and like it’s just another thing to fail at.
I’m interested in your thoughts on what to do when (if) you get into this state of mind.
- Isabella
No response to me Dean?
I actually got over this attitude instantly when I found out there was a competition in the program for the person who lost the most weight by percentage. I think the key here is that I believed I was a contender and it was something new and exciting – I’ve never won any competition for physical activity.
I’m still interested in your take on this, however, as I know I will get down in the dumps again and this time I just got lucky.
- Isabella
Hey Isabella. Sorry for the delay. My thing now is really focusing on today only. It’s easy to get overwhelmed of where we want to be and how far off that is.
For instance about 6 weeks ago I swore of junk food permanently. People ask how the heck I am going to go the rest of my life without it. My answer: I only need to worry about not having junk food today. I will deal with tomorrow when it comes.
That helps a lot. The second things I do is something called a pivot. Most people quit when they do something wrong. I assess each day and if something is off or isn’t what I planned I assess and I pivot in the direction I want to go.
Does that make sense?
Thanks Dean,
I like that pivot idea. I tend to be very all or nothing, so maybe if I focus on just going in the right direction instead of have I hit the target or not, it might get me in a better frame of mind.

Hey Dean,
Love your new podcast! Couple of things:
First I can’t believe that both you and Sean Croxton are still single; I’d be buying plane tickets if I weren’t in a relationship;)
Second, my favorite cleaning tip which can be translated to self care is ‘clean as you go is the sign of a pro’. Thought of this when you were talking about cleaning the countertops.
Lastly, It would be awesome to hear a podcast with 10 minute interview segments of different paleo like lifestylers talking about how they have implemented different healthy living strategies and seen results. Is this something you might consider?
Be Well,
Bevin
Hey Bevin,
You hooked/played me on the first comment. Nice one;-) Interesting idea on the segments. I’m slowly removing myself from the paleo space at the moment. Not enthralled with where it is at…but I do want to highlight the lifestyles of people who have created some serious change for sure.
I’m going to experiment with show set ups moving forward though. Thanks for the suggestion!!
Hey Dean,
Really enjoyed the latest podcast. The paradox of success idea struck a chord with me. I have thought about this concept, in less depth and with less articulation than you have, and the analogy that occured to me was that of illness/infection and medicine.
For example, once things are going well it is like I have been ill, taken my medication and because I am now well again there is no further need for medication.
One further comment I have is that despite finding it as difficult as anyone else to stick a lifestyle change, there is one area I have no trouble at all with. Two years ago I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, and to my knowledge I have stuck to a gluten-free diet ever since and have never been even slightly tempted to deviate from it, even when it appeared to be giving me no obvious benefits (I had a four month lag from starting the diet to feeling any better). I would love to be able to apply this ease of change to other parts of my life but have yet to nail down the reason(s) for it.
Great podcast again Dean! One shift I know I’ve made in the last week or two is I started a food log/journal where I not only write down or take pictures of what I eat and log it on Fitday, BUT I write OBSERVATIONS about that day including macro. counts and total calories plus any meds/supplements I[‘m taking. I have also offically “fired the experts when I sold my copies of the Paleo Diet and the Perfect Health Diet to a used book store. I am ready to become the expert on me based on my OWN observations!
Thanks again Dean for doing what you do.
